First off,
Family and Friends, I'm okay.
Graham "checked us in" to the ER on Facebook last night.
As you can imagine, that sent a slew of texts, comments, and concerns. Thank you all kindly.
After having kidney/stomach pain for over a week, my family doctor was concerned it was my appendix, so off she sent me to the ER for further evaluation. I wasn't happy about it. I just wanted another prescription, and then a date night with Graham at the Grilled Cheese Grill across the street.
Que the Scene at the ER.
Crazy homeless man asking everyone if they've called his cab for him.
Women crying in the corner.
Angry man screaming profanities at the nurse.
Woman rocking back and forth and murmuring to herself.
Finally the nurse put me in a room, and a few doctors asked me a gazillion questions over and over, and then the nurse tried to get a blood sample.
Me: "My veins rolls"
RN: "Oh, (smirk) I got this.
Me: "I know, but they usually end up poking me on both arms, and then in my hand to get a sample."
RN: "Well, let me just try this."
Guess what happened?
He ended poking me six times (three in both arms) and then finally "found one."
After a series of tests (MRI and an ultrasound of everything but the kitchen sink. Cha Ching!) and four hours later,
They found nothing.
F R U S T R A T I N G
The doctor gave me some pain meds, and some reassuring words that "it's probably an inflamed kidney from previous infection".
Yes, I'm thrilled that it's nothing major. But all in all, I want my four hours back, and I still want that freaking grilled cheese sandwich.

with that much time, i would have hoped to find something too! however, glad nothing was found... cuz that'd be awfultown too.
ReplyDeletehope you're feeling better muy pronto.
That is a horrible story!
ReplyDeleteI want you to a freaking grilled cheese sandwich too!
Im glad your ok! scary! now go make a grilled cheese sandwich!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you're ok!
ReplyDeleteI want that grilled cheese too. That sounds amazing.
but mostly I'm just happy that you're not really in danger. I worry.
xo
ugh! I hate that! When I had my kidney stone, 1 x-ray, 2 cat scans, and 1 urine test, and 3 hours later what did I get?
ReplyDelete"Yeah, you have a kidney stone, go home and pass it... it should happen tonight."
Four days later it finally passed and a month later I was left with a $3000 bill! yikes! Hope its not the same for you!
(Luckily insurance ended up covering most of it because it was an "emergency")
Randi- UGH. I have a feeling it's going to be in the price range. I'm praying insurance covers most of it, but we'll wait for the SURPRISE in the mail.
ReplyDeleteAt one point, after they kept saying it wasn't anything, I was like "Am i making this up in my head?" No. Not so, but I hate feeling like a wuss, and asking for more pain meds.
kate! that sucks! i'm so sorry. i had a similar experience with my gall bladder where i was in this horrific pain (and a week post-partum) and couldn't eat for a week. then they took it out and i was great. i kind of wish it was your appendix so you could feel great again. do kidney infections last a long time?
ReplyDeletehi.
ReplyDeletei'm glad you're ok! yikes! i feel bad for bothering you all day yesterday with an inflamed kidney!
your scene from the er brought back some tramatic memories for me- glad i'm not at the hospital anymore!
get better little kidney!
kate, i'm sorry about all of this. i hope that you're better. i'll pray for you!
ReplyDeletegrr!!!! I hate having to go to doctors like that when deep down you just "know" that nothing is seriously wrong and low and behold, you were right! Sorry about the nurse poking you like that, so not cool!!!!!! Hope you get to feeling better soon!
ReplyDeleteyikes i am glad you are okay but i am also very happy i found your blog! so cute :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry! I hope you put your foot down next time about the needle poking though. And I am so glad there is nothing major wrong with you. I hope you feel better soon.
ReplyDeleteI loved your description of the ER scene. It was exactly like that when I went in last month. funny but not.
lots of love.
OM Freakin Gosh Kate!!! Get better! I know the perfect remedy to what ails you. A large bowl of Clo's chicken noodle soup. Take care! Heart you the most!!!
ReplyDeleteGet to feeling better...nothing is worse than going to the Doctor and realizing you aren't feeling well because of a previous condition
ReplyDeleteYep.
ReplyDeleteE.R.'s are the worst place to waste a date night.
No fun.
I wish your experience would've been more conclusive...I feel that is the worst part...or the bill.
Anyhow, hopefully that kidney will settle down soon!
ohhh no!!! hate the ER. and hate when they do all that work and find nothing. lame.
ReplyDeletehope you're feeling better very, very soon.
Hi! Sorry I was a pain on the phone! Please know I love you and pretend I am fixing you a big bowl of chicken noodle soup, and a grilled cheese sandwich too ha ha I love you and sure worry about you! You tell Graham to call me if you need me and I will be there within... 12 hours probably Love ya MOM
ReplyDeleteSo sorry you had to go through all that.
ReplyDeleteI know the feeling of multiple pokes, and blown veins all too well. It happens every time. The pokes alone make for a horrible night, not to mention everything else you had to put up with.
Hugs. Get better soon friend.
oh no, kate! there is nothing worse! hope you start feeling better soon, though.
ReplyDeletepst. we'll be here all summer! are you headed this way? lets meet in yellowstone and camp/listen to 311.
oh my gosh i hope you're alright! you're in my thoughts

I bet the RN felt silly acting like he'd get it first try but didn't, hahaha.
ReplyDeleteI am glad to hear that it's nothing serious!
Yikes. we don't like the er either. hope you are better soon! I don't know much about kidney infections/inflamations, but they sound awful and painful and yucky. xoxo
ReplyDeleteblah, how annoying. i just watched this movie about the gerson diet and have been really into researching holistic doctors. i basically believe that whenever doctors don't know what's wrong it's time to go somewhere else.
ReplyDeleteew i'm so sorry. i've had weird kidney issues too, and it's so frustrating to not know exactly whats wrong. i hope things get better :/
