and
iron and wine
may 31st
crystal ballroom
maybe it was because it was a school night,
and we missed the opening band, the head and the heart (i know. i know.)
or, because it was a sold out crowd, and the mic wasn't turned up loud enough,
but friends,
i didn't love the iron and wine show.
in fact, we left early.
i couldn't see over the crowd
and
people were talking the ENTIRE time behind us.
(seriously, why people pay cash money to go to a show and talk, baffles me.)
it was a major bummer.
salt lake friends going to see them this weekend, i'm praying that your experience is better than ours.

i'm really sorry about your bad experience. boo :( saw them a few years back in slc and it was pretty good. i hope that helps you feel better?
ReplyDeleteWe were going to see them but will bet in SG this weekend... we're way bummed because the head and the heart are awesome!
ReplyDeletei have really fond memories of an iron & wine show about six years ago. it was amazing. and then i saw them play w/ calexico, and that was amazing. sorry you had a bad experience :(
ReplyDeleteoh, i totally can relate. i feel like now that i am "older" i am starting to like different things and things that i used to love (like staying out crazy late) just aren't as fun.
ReplyDeletethanks for you comment.
ReplyDeleteyour blog is a daily read and makes me want to move to Portland so desperately.
i left early when i saw him a couple years ago.
ReplyDeletei think i had the exact experience you had.
strange.
i'm sorry though! you're not too old!
Sorry about Iron & Wine.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you like a band so much, seeing them live can be sacred. And sometimes the venue, the kids around you, the excessive talking can absolutely ruin your experience. Thats actually why I'm hesistant to see my favorite bands twice. I'm lame.
yikes! i'm worried now. our venue is pretty small. maybe it will be not so bad. sorry that it stunk!
ReplyDeleteThat sucks! They're playing a free show here in Chicago next Monday and I thought about going, but I am just not sure if it will happen or not!
ReplyDeleteOH sad news! I have a hard time enjoying shows that are sold out... I just don't like crowds. So I FEEL you!
ReplyDeletei thought i commented, but turns out didn't. yet.
ReplyDeletewe saw sam beam {sans band} at Red Rocks in Denver like 2 years ago, and it was so super duper magical. i bet it was the losers around you that made it awful. or the venue. just listen to them on a nice mountain drive to make up for it.
when i went to see the head & the heart and iron & wine in salt lake i was late and missed the head & the heart too. suuuuch a bummer. i was secretly going more for them than iron. and in all honesty, it wasn't worth it for me. iron & wine disappointed me a bit. not because he isn't super talented or great live, but because i love their old stuff so much that the new stuff wasn't what i wanted to hear. and the crowds. gosh i hate concert crowds sometimes.
ReplyDeleteKate,
ReplyDeleteI was at this show too and it was nice to see someone else felt the same way. I love Iron & Wine, but the show just wasn't loud enough. I want it to be feel-the-music-in-my-bones loud.
The head & the heart made up for it. They're coming back in October!
